More Information

Four key project areas make up Platmin’s primary mineral properties. These are Pilansberg, Grootboom, Loksop and M’Phatlele, of which the first three are currently in the development phase. All of Platmin’s projects are located in the Bushveld Complex in north-central South Africa which is estimated to contain 90% of the global platinum resources.

Pilansberg, the flagship project, is located on the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex, approximately 60km northwest of the city of Rustenburg. This city is a major centre for the platinum mining industry. SRK has completed a feasibility study on Pilansberg. The study proposes to treat five million tonnes per annum from two open pits on the Tuschenkomst and Ruighoek properties. This ore will be processed through a central concentrating facility situated on Tuschenkomst.

Pilansberg hosts significant PGM mineralisation over a strike length of approximately 20km. The outcropping mineralised package typically includes the Merensky, Pseudo and UG2 Reefs. Where the sequence is fully preserved, the vertical distance from the top to the base of mineralisation is only 20 to 30m. This differs from the reef package elsewhere in the Bushveld where the reefs may be separated by more than 100m. As a result, the Pilansberg operation will target the recovery of the entire reef package during open pit mining.

Grootboom Project is situated 5km southwest of the town of Steelpoort in the Mpumalanga Province.

Loksop Project is located some 60km north of Witbank and Middelburg. Witbank is an established centre of mining activities. Loksop is subject to a joint-venture with Lonmin Plc and an initial resource estimate is targeted for 2008.

M’Phatlele is located approximately 50km south-east of Polowane, the capital city of Limpopo Province. To the west and along strike from M’Phatlele, Lonmin Plc recently purchased the operating Messina Mine. The M’Phatlele Project hosts PGM mineralisation in the UG2 and Merensky reefs over a strike length of about 8km. The reefs outcrop and dip at about 50 degrees to the south and drill testing has shown they extend to at least 2000m below surface.

Platmin Projects have a total JORC-compliant resource of 7.1Moz in the Measured and Indicated Categories of platinum group metals (platinum, palladium, rhodium, plus gold reported as either 3PGM+Au or 3PGE+Au) and 21.5Moz in the Inferred category of which 5.5Moz and 11.7Moz are attributable to Platmin. Importantly, all of Platmin’s projects at Pillansberg, M’Phatlele, Loskop and Grootboom have the target mineralisation outcropping.
